Shirley Kivell works primarily in
bronze, clay, styrofoam and built-up concrete. Her subject matter
usually includes human and animals with a whimsical bent. She loves
sculpting bas reliefs in clay then casting multiples in plaster.
Shirley Kivell's work ranges in size from a toilet
flush lever to the 5 foot plus styrofoam pig, boots and hat to the 8
foot sausage that graces the arch
on the Hogeye float. Other animals include a cat
and a donkey.
Kivell's work ranges in size and scope from a
toilet flush lever to floor mozaics to the 5-feet plus styrofoam
creations which adorn the floats representing the Elgin Chamber of
Commerce and Hogeye Festival. Her sculpture of Priscilla the Pig graces
the streets of Elgin symbolizing its roots as the community of Hogeye.
Kivell served as director of the Elizabeth Ney
Sculpture Conservatory/Austin Sculpture Center for 15 years. She was a
long time member of the Texas Society of Sculptors.
