Greg and Kay Silkenson have lived in Elgin
for 25 years. Their company - TALKING WOOD - was created when Kay
inherited some antique Long Leaf Pine boards from her
grandparents’ home in San Antonio.
Most of the wood in their pieces date back
to the late 1880’s; any square nails used in the art work are
also from the original wood. Many of the items used for
decoration are found or recycled.
Greg has been involved with many
construction projects in the past, including cabinet making, home
construction/remodeling, Habitat for Humanity and construction mission
trips. In July 2004 Greg began a two year furniture design and
building apprenticeship program which will allow them to expand their
wood working into additional areas.
Kay has worked in Elgin for a local
attorney since 1984.
Talking Wood pieces have been entered in
the 2003 Hog Eye Pearls Before Swine Art Show in Elgin and the 2004
Central Texas Woodworking Show in Austin.
MY ARTWORK: We are making crosses and
votive candle holders from Long Leaf Pine. Pieces vary. Some have
contrasting laminated hardwood, original house paint and
embellishments, including copper, square nails and other unique items.
