Most of my prints I have made with
cut-paper stencils. For each color, I trace areas to be printed
from the master drawing onto coated paper. I carefully cut them out
with an exacto knife. Assuring proper registration, I position
the stencil over the index print in the screen-print area, and print
that color. The paper is adhered to the screen with the ink.
In some prints I use filled-screen stencils to greater or lesser
extent. I paint block-out fluid directly on the screen prior to a
color series. Using shellac or glue as a block-out takes my
technique back to the techniques of commercial serigraphy in the early
20th century. Using paper and hand-painted block-out methods
limits my print runs to about 50 (at most and when things go well), but
produces an effect I like, and allows me to use more layers of color,
economically.
